  • It seems that some day, landline phones are going to be obsolete, as it seems that more and more people are using cell phones, and so at some point we will no longer need or be offered opportunities to have landline phone service. However, for now it is necessary for most people to continue with their landline phone service. Popular wireless carriers of today, such as Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T do not yet have phone service that is cheap enough or good enough to be able to replace landline phones in our homes or places of employment.

The number of people who are using cell phones only are growing, yet this growing number still only represents about 17 percent of the total American population, which means that there are still 83% of Americans who are relying on our landline phone service, and we want the cheapest phone service we can find without sacrificing the quality of the service.

Many people who have landline phone service maintain their landline service because they need to make international calls. Typically calls of this nature tend to be very expensive from a cell phone. Many people are also not ready to be completely confident in their cell phone providers to provide the best service, so they continue to keep their landlines.

Another reason why many people choose cheap landline phones over cell phones or in addition to cell phones is because of internet service. For those people who are out of the reach of the cable Internet service, home phone service may be the only way to achieve rapid internet access. It may also be the only way that a number of home-security systems are able to make emergency calls. Even some satellite TV services as well as the early forms of TiVo digital recorders do not work completely without landlines in order to be able to phone home. You also certainly cannot use a fax machine with your cell phone. Another issue is 911 calls from cell phones. When a cell phone is used to call 911, it is not traced to a certain address like the 911 calls that are made from landline phones. This can cause a problem in a serious emergency, and many people just feel more comfortable with a landline phone because of this.

There are even some banks and some credit cards that will not accept a wireless number as the primary phone number of the person. Some pizza places refuse to deliver to someone who can only give a cell phone number.
