  • As I look outside my window at the rain pouring down, being pushed into every exposed cavity by the relentless wind, I wonder what happened to the warm days of summer? It seems only yesterday that the kids were running around in shorts and vests and now we're having to drag out their winter clothes from the loft and make sure they are waterproof and windproof.

Children have to brave the weather much more than we do, whether they are walking to school or playing outside with friends. Whilst we would quite happily hibernate at this time of year, they are often at their most active. There are school trips to go on, camps, swimming and all sorts of outdoor clubs that start in September and run all through the winter. So if our children are to be braving the elements, it makes sense to ensure that they are fully protected against whatever the winter may throw at them.

So what makes good outdoor wear for kids? There are a few essentials you need to know when it comes to good outdoor protection.

Waterproof : so many nice winter jackets are woollen, which looks great and smart but these coats are useless against a wet and windy day. By a winter woollen by all means, but do make sure that they also have one waterproof coat in their possession.

Fleeces : lightweight fleeces are great for wearing underneath waterproof coats and/or anoraks to keep them nice and warm.

Hoods : yes it's surprising just how many waterproofs don't have hoods! Make sure that the hood is elasticated so that it can fit snugly around the head and doesn't keep blowing down.
